Please Implement This Cisco

Ivan Pepelnjak recently posted about the ‘do’ command at Cisco IOS Hints and Tricks:

The do command available in configuration modes of Cisco IOS is probably one of the best features ever implemented in IOS, but you tend to continue typing the do keyword even in the exec mode, resulting in syntax errors.

Hellz yeah!!!  That seems to be my single biggest time-killer (other than my own ignorance and fat fingers).  Ivan has created a simple TCL script (he’s the MacGyver of TCL) to allow you to use “do” before commands while in exec mode.  I really hope that Cisco implements this functionality in future IOS releases.

  1. Yeah, or like PIX/ASA just let you type the command in without having to type “do”. What a pain it is to have to alter your syntax. Why cant I just do a “sh ip int br” while I’m in the interface config mode? Not sure if there is any great logic that explains why this hasnt been done yet.

  2. It can get worse when you’re that into the habbit of using ‘do’, that you attempt to use it on the devices running CatOS without thinking 🙂
