Dynamips

I finally took a whack at getting Dynamips running.  I first viewed Internetwork Expert’s excellent Class On Demand for Dynamips.  I would strongly suggest taking a look at that as it will provide you with a step-by-step method for installing and configuring Dynamips.  They also include the necessary .net files to replicate their lab setup.

I got Dynamips running on my PC.  I did not run the full Internetwork Expert lab as I only wanted to set up a few routers with a frame relay switch in order to test the software (I only plan doing smaller labs on Dynamips).  Everything worked like a charm.  Dynamips actually includes a few sample .net files and one of them has 3 routers with a frame switch.

I am amazed at how cool and “lifelike” Dynamips is.  This software blows away any router simulator that I’ve ever used before.  I am very happy that I will be able to have a small lab on my notebook when I travel.

I’ve only scratched the surface of Dynamip’s capabilities.  There is an excellent forum which has quite a few video tutorials (under “How Tos“) and tons of advice for the product.

Dynamips does eat up a lot of resources.  I’ve seen posts recommending that you are running a Dual-Core processor with 2 gigs of RAM if you want to run Internetwork Expert’s lab without bogging down.  I’m running Dynamips on a 3 GHz Pentium 4 machine with 1.5 gigs of RAM with no problems.  I am only running 3 routers and one frame relay switch though.  The CPU utilization for the Dynamips process does run at 99% even with only these few devices.

  1. Hiya,

Look into the “idlepc” function of dynamips…
If you use Windows with dynagen, use the command “idlepc get R1” for example… You should be able to get the load on the CPU down to under 10%.
    Cheers, Dirk

  3. […] Internetwork Expert has really embraced Dynamips (the free Cisco router emulator).  As I posted earlier, they have a free class-on-demand session on their website as well as the .net (router and topology […]

  4. I just loaded dynamips on my computer this weekend and it runs like a champ. I just need to get a more robust box to run all of the routers and switch images for the Internetwork Expert labs. The Internetwork Expert site says I can buy the Dynamips version of the workbook for a discounted $99 (as opposed to $195) since I already have the regular workbooks. I think I’m going to give it a try. One of the Brian’s at IE says you could do 80% of your practice labs with Dynamips and save thousands. I recently read an email from one of the Groupstudy “pass-ees” who said he used Dynamips exclusively in prep for the lab. I would at least do a mock lab or two with real equipment before the test. Good luck.

  5. I have been using Dynamips for about 6 months to simulate all Internetwork Expert Workbooks. I had to change some interfaces in the workbooks and also made changes in startup/initial configurations required to get the routers running at an initial topology. I have been using the following Systems:
    1. Intel Core2Duo 2.0 GHz with 1 Gig Ram
    2. Intel Pentium D 2.66 GHz with 1 Gig Ram

I have used the Ghostios, sparsemem and memmap options of dynamips to get my memory work efficiently.

  6. Dynamips is an awesome application, i cant imagine without it i could have even started my CCIE Preparations. As of now Dynamips can load balance the routers between several workstations. Here is what i have done:
    1. Router Instances of R1 – R5, BB1, BB2 are on Core2Duo.
    2. Router Instances of SW1,SW2,SW3,SW4, R6, BB3 are on Pentium D.

All of my routers are running 3640 12.4 IOS with and without Cryptosupport. Additional Crypto support adds load on CPU.

My R6 and SW1 Routers are running Cisco 3725 Image just for testing and they are working fine.

All are accessible from my laptop via SecureCRT.

At Full Swing, the CPU Utilization remains at 70% – 90% on all Workstations after the use of optimal idlePC values.

  8. Sola,

I have no idea if Dynamips will work on Windows Vista Home Edition. I can’t see a reason why it would not, but you should check out http://7200emu.hacki.at/ for an answer.

  14. Right click and run it as administrator. Also when I ran it on vista I had to find NPPtools.dll and put it in my windows system folder. Other than that it runs fine on vista. Good luck

  17. Hello,

Great work and thanx to the initiators of this forum. Please I’m having problem running dynamips on vista home edition. Can any one who has gone around this recommend to me the version of dynamips to installed and what else could be done.

  18. I have been running dynagen on Vista Home Premium with no problems. I have found that you must first run the Network Device list as administrator. Then run dynamips server as you do in xp. You then can startup your .net file.

  23. I just thought I would reccomend an addition to Dynamips that I found. It makes it just even more awesome. GNS3 is a graphical utility for building and using dynamips. It was all sorts of cool features, it installs in an all in one installer including everything you need. Also, it includes a cisco PIX emulator as well.

    http://www.gns3.net/

BTW, I just recently started on my CCIE R&S, just the initial reading etc, but I have been using Dynamips for small labs to reinforce what i’m reading and it works great.

For the network device list issue for vista can be solved by ‘Turn User Account Control Off” under User Accounts under Control Panel.

It works for me. Let me know if it works for you all by email to me peterchin_oukl29@yahoo.com,
